Don't have a significant other? Don't worry about it.

What to do if you’re alone on Valentine’s Day?

Holidays are difficult times for singles. Especially those with a proclivity to feel lonely.

During these times we may beat ourselves up for not having another person to share our lives with, or we may feel hopeless at the thought of eventually finding that special someone.

  1. Go out with friends. It helps if they are single, but even if they aren’t, the reminder that there are people who genuinely enjoy your company is a better than feeling lonely at home.

  2. Don’t turn on the radio. Pop music is so frequently about people falling in love, so frequently provides grotesque metaphors for strangers having sex, that it makes Antonio Banderas write in his tear-soaked diary. You don’t need to hear how apparently easy it is to find true love. Likewise, romantic comedies and melodramatic television shows are a no-no as well. Grey’s Anatomy is just My Best Friend's Wedding with scrubs and sutures.

  • Don’t do anything drastic in your social life. If you feel especially alone on Valentine’s Day, call a friend, not the girl or guy who you know has a crush on you, but you haven't felt that attracted to them. The same goes for ex-boyfriends and ex-girlfriends.

  • Do the things that make you feel good about yourself. Maybe you make or put together puzzles, write, build cars, draw or perform gymnastics. Whatever it is, make Valentine’s Day your excuse to gorge on your creative passion.

  • If all else fails, simply distract yourself. You don’t need to bottle your feelings up. In fact, you should acknowledge any bad feelings you have, but that doesn’t mean you have to sit and self-analyze all day. Instead of doing something creative, do something entertaining. Watch , dig into your video game collection for a favorite you haven’t played in a while, play music that you may now know by heart, but were once inspired by. Top it all off by ordering in your favorite food or cooking your favorite dish.

  • Hopefully, these tips can help you get through the day without too many feelings of insecurity.

Being single is a struggle that few people publicly acknowledge for fear of embarrassment, or coming off as a loser. But whether you have someone or you don’t, you're not a loser.
