In Marion, Biden Flubs Iowa for Ohio

One of the nets I have in place to try to catch all of the news that matters in Marion, is a Google Alert for Marion, Iowa.

That's how this story came to my attention: Biden confuses Iowa with Ohio in campaign stop.

It struck me as a funny little flub and came fully equipped with a Marion dateline, so here goes.

Apparently, Vice President Joe Biden, who love him or hate him is known for putting his foot in his mouth from time-to-time, was campaigning in Marion. More specifically, Marion, Ohio. Just, he seemed to think he was in Iowa, or at least he said he did.

“I mean literally, ladies and gentlemen, this is the guy who’s running all the ads here in Iowa saying he’s going to get tough on China,” Biden said chiding GOP nominee Mitt Romney at a local high school, according to the Columbus Dispatch.

So, we can take this in a couple of ways.

First, the former Democratic senator from Delaware made an innocent slip of the tongue. He has been in and out of both of these battleground states in the lead up to the election campaigning for votes.

Iowa. Ohio. Four letters. Lots of vowels. Plenty of people can't pick either of us out on a map.

And, there's some evidence it was just that.

At the same speech, Biden said, an "Ohioan said, where are you coming from? And I said, Dayton. And he said, where are you going? I said, Marion. He said, I read in the paper you said you love Ohio. He said, that must be true; you've gone from Dayton Ohio, to Marion, Ohio."

Or, we can look at it in a much more calculated way.

Marion, Ohio is 550 miles away from Marion, Iowa. Clearly, Marion, Iowa is the preferred destination. We have the Hawkeyes, the Cyclones, the Panthers, corn-on-the-cob, American Gothic.

So, a second explanation is that he accidentally let out that he wished he was in Iowa.
