With the big box stores such as Walmart and Target moving Black Friday up by hours -- and into Thankgsiving Day -- Friday also marks the international “holiday” Buy Nothing Day.

Whether to buy or not to buy is, of course, your choice. If you’re on the side of sane shopping, though, you might consider a number of store-free activities in Marion on Friday.

And this Saturday is Small Business Saturday 2012, so you may want to show some local small businesses your financial love.

Here is a few activities in and around Marion for Friday:

"Music in the MUD" from 7 to 10 p.m. at Campbell Steele Gallery: This week's live performance will be "The Bryce Janey Blues Polemic." Doors open at 6 p.m., with music from 7 to 10 p.m. Tickets are $10 and may be purchased by calling the gallery at 319-373-9211.

Music in the MUD is presented in cabaret-style atmosphere, offering a selection of fine wines, beers, and appetizer plates. Reservations are strongly encouraged.

Check out the "Close to Home Landscapes" gallery exhibit at Lowe Park Arts and Environment Center. The featured works are by Mt. Vernon artists Susan Coleman and Marty Mitchell.
