Chief: Marion High School Fire Likely Caused By Electrical Malfunction

Firefighters responded to a fire in the science lab at Marion High School on Sunday.

A fire at Marion High School on Sunday evening was unintentional and likely started due to an electrical malfunction, according to the Marion Fire Department.

Fire Chief Jason Hansen said the fire started in the area of an aquarium in the school's science lab. No one was injured.

"We think it was unintentional," Hansen said. "It started in the area of the aquarium. It looks like an electrical issue with the pump and filter system."

A news release states the call came in at around 7:27 p.m., and the fire was extinguished by 7:52 p.m. The fire was contained to the one classroom, which sustained minimal damage, according to the news release.

The cost of the damage is not yet known.

An activity was going on at the school at the time. Hansen said there were fewer than 20 people there. They were evacuated.
