What Types of Snow Emergencies are There?
The City of Marion has two types of snow emergencies.
- The snow route parking emergency. This is declared when road conditions are icy and slick and or snow accumulation has amounted to two to four inches. If this is declared, cars are no longer able to park in emergency routes until the emergency is declared over.
- Winter storm emergency. This is where four or more inches have fallen on the ground. When this is declared, all cars must be removed from the streets.
When Do the Plows Come Out in Marion?
There is no official time frame or condition for snow-plows to be brought out to the streets. Usually, Miller said, the plows will come out after about an inch of snow, or, generally speaking, driving conditions are difficult due to snow or ice. Emergency snow routes are plowed first.Â
How Long Do I Have to Shovel My Sidewalks?
The city of Marion gives you 12 hours to remove snow and ice from your sidewalk once winter weather passes.Â

There is no designated area, said Miller. Though, in the case of such an emergency, he said the public safety division of the city — the Police Department and Fire Department — will likely house people during such severe weather events.
