Fatal Car Accident Update: Charges Possible as Police Turn Case Over to Linn County Attorney

Police say Chase Goers was traveling the wrong way on Interstate 380 and collided with another car. Kelley McLaren died in the accident.

Cedar Rapids Police are recommending charges be filed in a fatal car crash last month.

The case is currently at the Linn County Attorney's Office for review.

"The Linn County Attorney's office may direct us to do further interviews or they may file the charges we recommend," Cedar Rapids Police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said. "They may raise the charges or reduce them."

Early in the morning on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, Nov. 18, police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Interstate 380 just south of Cedar Rapids.

A vehicle driven by Kelley McLaren, 25, of Marion, was heading northbound. A second vehicle driven by Chase Goers, 17, of Cedar Rapids, was heading southbound in the same northbound lane. The vehicles collided head-on with both vehicles sustaining heavy damage, according to police.

Goers was transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Hamblin said he survived. The investigation is not yet a public record, and will not be until it is closed.
