Update: Fire Department Says Marion House Fire Was 'Incendiary"

Firefighters responded to a house fire on Wednesday evening. No one was injured.

 

Update at 12:51 p.m.

A Marion house fire Wednesday evening has been determined to be "incendiary," according to a statement from the Marion Fire Department.

An official at the fire station clarified that this means that the fire was not necessarily accidental, but they aren't classifying it as arson.

They declined further comment.

No one was injured in the blaze, which caused minor damage. The fire remains under investigation.

A home close to center of Marion caught fire on Wednesday evening.

No one was believed to be living their at the time and no one was injured. 

Neighbors noticed smoke coming from the southwest corner of the house at 490 20th Street in Marion and notified authorities around 8:35 p.m. on Wednesday.

Firefighters forced their way in and discovered heavy smoke and fire in the basement. They put out the flames within five or 10 minutes, according to a news release from the fire department.

There was fire and smoke damage throughout the basement, but only light smoke damage on the first floor. 

The fire department is still investigating and additional information will be released as soon as it becomes available.
