Is Marion a Bedroom Community?

Over the past five months I’ve written on Marion’s , its and the plans the city of Marion has for the .

Through speaking with residents and city officials on their thoughts of Marion, I learned of a divisive issue. Many have either labeled Marion a bedroom community or fought that notion vigorously.

At this point, I’m not sure what to believe. It’s true that for many people, Marion is where their home is, but not where they work or spend their time. 

Despite that, there is a growing and fascinating district of creative uptown Marion businesses that are not only patronized by many in the city, but draw residents from surrounding areas. In addition, Marion is known for having two excellent school districts that are in constant activity.

And even if it is true that Marion is in fact a bedroom community, the plans for residential and commercial construction on the north side and the projection of Marion growing it’s population to 50 thousand in 20 years may mean that it won’t be for long.
