Support for Linn County Casino Winning Facebook War

Supporters of bringing a casino to Linn County are winning the war - at least in social media.

The world of social media isn't a substitute for the real world, certainly, but it can offer at least some measure of attitudes.

If you look at Facebook, support for a Linn County casino is crushing the opposition.

As of noon today (Wednesday), 1,259 people have "liked" the Vote Yes Linn County Facebook page and 1,466 are "talking about" it (there's numbers for everything, aren't there?).

By comparison, 668 people have "liked" Just Say No Casino's Facebook page, and 573 people are "talking about" it.

Supporters gained enough signatures to put bringing a casino to Linn County on the ballot. The Linn County Board of Supervisors are expected to set a date for the election on Friday, KGAN reports. The vote could be as soon as March.

To be sure, there's people like me who've clicked "like" as a way to monitor their news and updates. I've "liked" both groups. And, the "Yes" group may be more focused on social media as part of its campaign strategy.

But, for many who's "liked" the pages, it truly is a measure of where they stand.

Don't believe everything you read in social media, but don't ignore it either.
