Video: Marion Police Chief Expresses Concern over Iowa's 'Shall Issue' Gun Law

Harry Daugherty, Marion's police chief, outlines a change in Iowa's gun laws and criticizes the lack of oversight Iowa sheriffs have in denying gun permits.

In an interview with a representative from the interest group, Mayor Against Illegal Guns, Marion Police Chief Harry Daugherty offers criticism of Iowa's "shall issue" gun permit laws.

He criticized the change in Iowa's gun permit process, which was altered in 2010, and said the new process takes away the power of Iowa sheriffs to deny permits to gun permit applicants.

"They pretty much have to give out weapon permits to just about anybody", he said in the video.

But this was back in March of 2011.

Since then, the discussion over Iowa gun rights has pressed further. That "stand your ground" law has gained notoriety for giving more leeway to those that claim to kill not necessarily out of self defense, but out of a easier standard: whether or not the shooter felt threatened.

Given the heated national discussion over gun rights laws and Daugherty's comments above, do you think the discussion over guns rights in Iowa and the country has gone too far, or do you think advancements in making guns more accessible and giving more leeway to those claiming self-defense is a step in the right direction?
