“Every day I am inspired by the good work Iowans do in their communities, and Tom’s work is a wonderful example of this,” Braley said. “He saw a problem in his community and decided to take action. He called on his community to come together for this cause, and because of his leadership, Shoes for Kids has made a difference in the lives of thousands of Iowa children. I hope that his actions motivate Iowans to reach out and help their communities in whatever way they’re able.”
Barnes, owner of Barnes Manufacturing, breathed new life into the Shoes for Kids project in 2003. The program gives a new pair of shoes to kids in need and is administered by school nurses. It started in two school districts, but quickly expanded based on growing needs. S4K has raised more than $50,000 and has reached over 3,500 children. Barnes’ program has also helped children in Parkersburg following the 2008 tornadoes, children affected by the 2008 floods, and recently sent 80 pairs of shoes to Nigeria to donate to a local orphanage.
