Marion to Cedar Rapids Trail (Finally) Fully Funded

The CEMAR Trail, which has been on the lips of city officials for more than 10 years, now has all its financial ducks in a row.

Bikers, walkers, power walkers and kids who aren't allowed to ride their bikes on the street: Rejoice!

The CEMAR trail that will connect downtown Marion to downtown Cedar Rapids has found the funding to complete the last bit of construction on the trail, 10 years after planning for the trail began.

The officials from Marion, Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha and Robins that make up The Corridor Metropolitan Planning Organization, just approved $4.5 million in federal and state transportation dollars for the project, according to the Gazette.

Some of that money will be put towards connecting trails in Marion, which will further the Boyson Trail to all the way to .

Tom Treharne, Marion’s director of planning and development, told the paper that the funding will enable Marion to get the paved CEMAR Trail all the way to its downtown. The trail paving will enter Marion south of Highway 100, go north on an existing trail segment that is now crushed rock to Thomas Park and then follow a rail right of way to downtown Marion.

The money will be freed up in October of 2015.
