Marion to Receive $1 Million from State to Help Complete 7th Street and 7th Avenue Roundabout Project

On Tuesday, the Iowa Transportation Commission approved the state’s $2.6 billion five-year highway program.

Included in the program is $1 million to be received by the City of Marion for the Central Corridor Project to complete the proposed roundabout at 7th Street and 7th Avenue to provide capacity improvements and connect the west end of the Central Corridor to 7th Avenue. The project will connect five entering street legs.

The purpose of Iowa’s Clean Air Attainment Program (ICAAP) is to help finance transportation projects and programs that result in attaining or maintaining the national ambient air quality standards of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments. ICAAP funds are awarded to projects and programs with the highest potential for reducing transportation-related congestion and air pollution, thereby maintaining Iowa’s clean air quality.

The Marion Central Corridor includes parts of 6th and 7th Avenues from 1st Street to 35th Street. The first phase of the project included the reconstruction of 6th Avenue from 8th Street to 13th Street, with improvements such as a multi-use path, pedestrian accommodations and streetscaping. Improvements 
were also made to the storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water mains. 

When this multiple-phase project is complete, the revitalized Central Corridor will solidify Marion’s place as a regional hub for business, urban-living, and entertainment. More information about the project can be found at www.marioncentralcorridor.com.
