Marion Weather Alert: 'Major Winter Storm' With Up to a Foot of Snow and Near Blizzard Conditions

A winter storm watch has been upgraded to a warning for Linn County for later Wednesday and Thursday.

Forecasters are predicting a "major winter storm" is heading our way with a possible foot of snow and near blizzard conditions.

National Weather Services in the Quad Cities has issued a winter storm warning for much of Iowa, including Linn County.

The warning is in effect from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 p.m. Thursday. Heavy snow fall and strong winds are expected to hit most of the state starting Wednesday afternoon and lasting into Thursday. Wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour and 6 to 12 inches of snow are predicted.

The combination of heavy snow and strong winds will result in "near blizzard conditions," especially during the day on Thursday, according to NWS.

Travel conditions will rapidly deteriorate.

"Visibilities may be reduced to below a quarter of a mile at times in open areas," the warning states.

The temperatures will drop to the teens by Thursday and wind chills may be as low as zero degrees as the day moves into the evening.
