News You Might Have Missed: Nov. 21-28

Check out some local and state-wide stories you might have missed in the week leading up to Thanksgiving.

  • Six of seven Iowa Metropolitan Planning Organizations could be closed down, according to a story in The Gazette. Apparently, a bill in the US Senate could shut down two-thirds of the MPOs nationwide. Metropolitan Planning organizations are groups mandated by Federal law to manage and plan highway and other transportation projects in metropolitan areas
  • A number of Iowa National Guard Members returned to the Hawkeye state last Wednesday, including at least one from Marion, Lt. Forest Lightle. The Quad City Times has more on the heartwarming reunion.
  • A Marion boy with severe food allergies received a dog specially trained to sniff out potentially dangerous food residue. According to Eastern Iowa Life, nearly $22,000 was donated to his family for the dog, from various community donors on a Facebook page.
  • Dan Kellams, a Marion raised author, writes an Op-ed in Litchfield County Times about his boyhood dog, Spike, which he and his brother received shortly after moving to Marion.
  • According to the Gazette, Marion High School won funding from The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation for its "Hot Fun in the Summertime Excursions." was among several schools in the Cedar Rapids metropolitan area to receive The Fund for Educational Excellence grants.
  • According to projections published in a story by the Gazette, Iowa's prison's will reach 147. percent of its intended capacity in 10 years. This would push the prison population past 11,000 by 2021.
  • Jason Zengerle writes in New York Magazine about the influence of the Iowa caucus. He points out that some of the candidates that have invested most heavily in meeting Iowan's have not seen much "return on investment" in the polls.
