University of Iowa Community Credit Union Expands into Marion

Marion has a new option for financial services, banking and loans. There is a ribbon cutting today for the UI Credit Union.

After surveying the competition, the University of Iowa Community Credit Union felt they could provide a valued service in Marion.

Credit Union President Jeff Disterhoft saw an opportunity to offer strong home and auto loans and other competitive rates to the residents of Marion. After a month in business in Marion, it appears they made the right choice, he said.

"The success has exceeded our expectation," Disterhoft said.

This afternoon (Feb. 20), the credit union along with the Marion Chamber of Commerce and the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance Ambassadors will hold a ribbon cutting celebrating the new branch, which officially opened on Jan. 14.

The branch is located at 727 Oakbrook Drive, at the corner of East Post Road and Highway 100.

Here's some of the specs on the credit union from the Marion Chamber:

The 6,500 square foot building is a full-service facility for credit union member transactions, account openings, mortgage and investment needs.

The University of Iowa Community Credit Union was established in 1938 and serves over 100,000 members with 10 office locations. It is $1.8 billion in assets and is ranked by Callahan and Associates first in the nation among all 14,000 federal insured credit unions and banks in Total Return to the Member.

Disterhoft said some members were traveling a long distance for financial services in Iowa City, and asked about getting a branch closer to home.

This is the University of Iowa Credit Union's third branch in Linn County. There's also locations in Hiawatha and Cedar Rapids. A location in Cedar Falls is also under construction, and the credit union is opening a new headquarters and branch in North Liberty.

Disterhoft said he does not expect to extend the credit union's geographical footprint beyond where they are, but they could continue expanding in Linn and Black Hawk Counties.
