Woman with Marion Ties Identified in Fatal Police Shooting in Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids police shot and killed Desirae Daniel, who they say led police on a car chase and then displayed a handgun after being stopped.

Cedar Rapids police were involved in a fatal shooting following a car chase early this morning.

Police attempted to make a traffic stop at about 2:29 a.m. this morning at F Avenue and 19 Street NW. The vehicle did not stop. Police gave chase before the vehicle eventually came to a stop at the 200 block of 27 Street NW.

Police say when they approached the vehicle the driver displayed a handgun. She was subsequently shot and pronounced dead at 3:16 a.m. at St. Luke's Hospital.

The Gazette reported and police later confirmed the person shot was Desirae A. Daniel, 27, of Cedar Rapids. According to her Facebook page, she is from Michigan, attended school at Metro High School and later Kirkwood Community College. She worked as a cook at the Marion Country Kitchen.

A Facebook page has been set up to pay tribute to her.

The Division of Criminal Investigation will conduct and investigation of the shooting. Police did not disclose the names of the officers involved.
