Urbandale Community School District: Urbandale CORE Donates Over 2,500 Essential Items In Support Of Refugees

Urbandale High School (UHS) students participating in the Urbandale CORE (Community of Racial Equity) group recently led a school-wide initiative to collect essential items in support of refugee families from Afghanistan who recently arrived in the Des Moines area. The “Hygiene for Humanity Drive” collected over 2,500 individual items and raised funds to purchase essential supplies. Donations will be provided to families from Afghanistan by way of care packages, weekly drops, or at designated stores where refugees can shop for free around the city.

“At Urbandale CORE, our mission is ‘Community. Advocacy. Liberation.’ and we always focus on making our community strong wherever we are,” said UHS English Teacher and CORE Sponsor Karin Ibrahim. “As a community, we show up for each other, and this is what it looks like to show up.”

Urbandale Community School District is incredibly proud of these talented students for the time, dedication, and perseverance it took to organize and implement a school-wide initiative in support of families from Afghanistan.
