City Administrator's Contract Could Be Eliminated at Tonight's Council Meeting

At an April 16 meeting of the Waukee City Council, council member Mike Watts spoke candidly about issues he felt were being overlooked by city administration.

Watts suggested several items needed immediate attention including the Alice's Road right of way; an assessment policy for street improvement; the proposed community center and how the council should proceed; rules and regulations for the council and mayor; and administration and staffing issues.

Watts specifically mentioned city administrator Jeff Kooistra suggesting that he wasn't up-to speed on council procedures, mainly the way items are added to the council agenda.

"Jeff is confused about what we can do and what we can’t do," said Watts. "If someone calls up and says, 'I want something on agenda,' then put it on the agenda."

Waukee City Council Meets Tonight

According to tonight's Waukee City Council agenda, Kooistra's position and duties are up for discussion.

The agenda includes a resolution “regarding employment contract of City Administrator/Clerk” and a second resolution regarding “duties of the City Administrator.”

Kooistra, 59, oversees the city budget, manages city workers, advises city boards and coordinates with other agencies, according to the Des Moines Register. His annual salary is $122,300.

The Waukee City Council will meet tonight at at 5:30 p.m. in the Waukee City Council Chambers, 230 W. Hickman Rd. The meeting is open to the public.
