Five Things in Waukee: A Luncheon, Fun at the Library and a Drive for Warmth
Here's what's going on in Waukee today, Oct. 19, and some other stuff you might want to know.

1) Chamber Networking Luncheon - Thursday
The Waukee Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Networking Luncheon Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Village at Legacy Pointe. It will be catered by Mickey's Irish Pub. Melissa Stimple of the Waukee Area Christian Food Pantry and Ashlee Adams of Aflac will be the speakers. Cost is $12 in advance and $15 the day of. Attendees are required to RSVP at www.waukeechamber.com/registration.
2) Activities Today at the Waukee Public Library

Looking for something for the kids to do today? Take them to the Waukee Public Library. Preschool storytime, for ages 3-6, begins at 10:15 a.m. Babies and Books, for ages birth to 18 mos., lets the little ones participate in songs, books and rhymes. No registration required. Only one child per caregiver, please.
For the older set, teen open gaming begins today at 3:30 p.m.

3) 4th Annual Winter Warmth Drive
If you have a child in the Waukee Schools, start cleaning out your closets now because the is on. Students (and parents) are encouraged to bring new and gently used outerwear - coats, jackets, hats, mittens, scarves and blankets - to their school where they will be distributed to those in need in the surrounding area. Check with your school for details. Collections will continue until Oct. 21.

5) Did You Know?
Did you know Waukee has been home to several famous Iowans? Hal Manders was a Major League pitcher in the 1940s. Manders passed away in 2010 at the age of 92.
Matt Nickell is an soccer player who last played forward for D.C. United in Major League Soccer. Nickell was born in Waukee and attended Drake University where he played soccer for the Bulldogs.
Also, Joey Jordison, drummer for the heavy metal band Slipknot, lived in rural Waukee with his parents and two sisters growing up. Jordison's band has sold millions of albums and even won a Grammy in 2006.
