Five Things in Waukee: Early Out, Wear Orange and Fun Stuff at the Library

Here's what's going on in Waukee today, Oct. 12, and some other stuff you might want to know.

1) Early Dismissal

Don't forget! Today is early dismissal for all Waukee Schools. Elementary schools will dismiss today at 1:40 p.m. Secondary schools dismiss at 12:50 p.m.

2) Wear Orange to Stop Bullying

The National Bullying Prevention Center invites all students, teachers and even parents to wear the color orange today in show of support for National Unity Day. By wearing orange, you'll show those being bullied that they are not alone, that you care, and that you are helping lead the movement against bullying. Students in the Waukee School District will be wearing orange today. How about you?

3) Waukee Public Library Activities

Looking for a little something to do with the kids today? The has preschool storytime for ages 3-6 at 10:15 a.m. Babies and books is also held at 10:15 a.m. This program is for pre-walkers and a caregiver. Songs, books and rhymes are included.

Also today, the Waukee Library will host a showing of the teen movie, "I Am Number 4" rated PG-13 at 1:30 p.m.   

4) The Weather

Grab your umbrella on the way out today. Showers and thunderstorms are likely with a high near 71. Tonight, much of the same, with a low near 52.

5) Do You Know?

Do you know where the "Waukee: The Key to Good Living" came from? In 1973, the city sponsored a contest for the creation of a town emblem. The winning entry was received from Jerome (Brick) Volkmer which incorporated a key into the city name. Today, the City of Waukee still utilizes a logo based upon Volkmer's original design.
