Five Things Waukee Residents Should Know: About 9/11

Here are a few things going on in and around Waukee Sunday to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11.

1) Point of Grace "Freedom Rock" Dedication

Point of Grace will host a 9/11 remembrance reception and services on Sunday in addition to dedicating Ray "Bubba" Sorensen's latest "Freedom Rock" creation.

The reception begins at 7:30 a.m. The dedication will be at 8:30 a.m. The 9:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. services will also honor the anniversary of 9/11.

2) Jewish Federation

Join members of the Jewish Federation of Greater Des Moines for the opening of The Jewish Federation Community School. The Jewish community will gather at 9 a.m. Sunday at Caspe Terrace, 33158 Ute Ave., Waukee, to mark two special occasions: a prayer service of remembrance and a ribbon cutting for the school at 9:30 a.m. A brunch will follow.

3) 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony, Des Moines

A 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony will be held on Sunday at 7:30 a.m. at the State Capitol to honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001.

The ceremony will be held on the east side of the state capitol and will feature speakers General Timothy Orr of the Iowa National Guard, Brig. General Derek Hill of Iowa Homeland Security and Emergency Management Division, Barry Ferguson of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Commissioner Larry Noble of the Iowa Department of Public Safety. In addition, Simon Estes and Linda Jucket will perform. The event is free and open to the public.

4) Gray's Lake Walk, Des Moines

Members of the Des Moines AmeriCorps Alumni Chapter will hold a community walk and service project at Gray’s Lake on Sunday beginning at 12:30 p.m. The walk will honor the lives of heroes and victims of 9/11. Participants are encouraged to bring a new or gently used winter coat or school supplies. Service projects will run from 1:45 to 3 p.m., including quilt decorating and creating cards for military youths.

5) Iowa Public Television, Statewide

Iowa Public Television will air a one-hour special, "Iowans Remember 9/11" on Sunday at 7 p.m. The special is hosted by opera singer and Iowa native Simon Estes will feature Iowa artists The Nadas, Bob Dorr, the Des Moines Symphony, the Iowa State University Choir and Estes himself.

The special will air again Sunday evening at 10:30 p.m. and Monday at 7 p.m. on IPTV.
