Waukee City Council Approves Final Plans for Community Center

The Waukee City Council approved final plans for the new community center in the old fire station at Seventh and Walnut streets.

The new Waukee Community Center has taken another step toward completion.

After months of discussion and public input, final plans for the center were presented and approved at the Waukee City Council meeting Monday night.

The building at 355 Seventh St. will be transformed from an old fire station into a gathering space to be used by residents of the city and surrounding area by June 2012.

David Voss from ge Wattier Architecture presented the plans to the council Monday. The 2,700-square-foot community center will include two meeting rooms — one large and one small. Each will have a small kitchenette and storage. Restrooms will be located outside the meeting rooms so they can be used independent of the meeting rooms.

Outside, the building will have a front porch area that faces Walnut Street. This  area will allow the green space along the south side of the building to be used for outdoor concerts and movie nights.

"We had to make the most out of a fairly small building," Voss said. "We think it meets the needs of what was talked about."

Overall cost for the project will be $361,580. The motion to approve the plans was unanimous. Council member Mike Watts was not in attendance.
