Tonight, the Waukee Theatre Arts program debuts its fall play, "The Elephant Man" at the Theatre Arts Center at Prairieview School. The show begins at 7 p.m.
"The Elephant Man" is the true story of Joseph Merrick (called "John" in this adaptation), a man so physically deformed that he's treated much like a sideshow freak. Best known as "The Elephant Man," Merrick is introduced to refined society where he gains respect for his intelligence but is still plagued by his appearance.

Producer/director Wayne Kischer said he chose the play to stretch students' abilities and challenge them with a positive message.
"We’ve done three comedies in a row and needed to have something more serious," said Kischer. "This is a really good story and it has a good message."
