Move Over State Fair — Waukee Schools to Start In Mid-August

The Waukee school board approved the calendar for the 2012-13 school year at Monday night's meeting. Students in the district will begin classes Aug. 15.

Parents, mark your calendars. Waukee students will officially kick start the 2012-13 school year on Wednesday, Aug. 15.

The approved the 2012-13 school calendar at its regular meeting Monday night.

Starting the school year in mid-August ensures that students at Waukee High School will be able to complete final exams before they leave for the winter break.

Thanksgiving break - Nov. 21 - 23

Winter break - Dec. 24 - Jan. 1, 2013

Spring break - March 15 - 22, 2013

In addition to these dates, Waukee students will not attend school on Martin Luther King Day, Jan. 21, 2013, a change from this year's schedule. The last day of school will be May 21, pending there are no snow days to make up.

It's not the first go 'round the board has had with the school calendar. Last spring, a board-appointed Parents Commitee was tasked with making suggestions for the 2012-13 calendar. In December, district parents were asked to complete a survey regarding the calendar and in January, the Parents Committee presented its suggestions to the board.
