ENCORE: What to Do With the Kids During Waukee's Winter Break

Waukee Schools are out on winter break won't return to class until Jan. 3. What ever will you do until then? Here are some suggestions.

It never fails.

It's a couple days after Christmas. The presents have been unwrapped, the kids have only been out of school a couple days when it starts: "Mom, I'm bored!"

Beat the winter break doldrums this year and give the kids something to do while school is out next week. Here are our suggestions for fun things to do in Waukee the week of Dec. 26-30.

Christmas Break Day Camp at Sportsplex West

Register your young 'uns in kindergarten through fifth grade for one of 's Christmas break day camps. Beginning Dec. 26, the camps will include games, activities, snacks and fun for everyone. Sign up for half-day or full-day camps. Cost is $25-40 per child.

Seven Oaks Boone Ski Trip          

Students in fourth through eighth grade can spend a full day skiing at Seven Oaks in Boone on Dec. 28. Attendees will depart around 9 a.m. from Waukee City Hall and will return at 5 p.m. There will be six hours of skiing and a mini-ski lesson. Participants must dress warm and bring spending money for lunch and snacks. Kids are welcome to bring their own sack lunch and snacks.

Family Movie Day at the Waukee Public Library

Bring the whole family to the Dec. 28 at 2 p.m. for Family Movie Day. The library is showing "Rio" (rated G). Popcorn and cupcakes will be provided and attendees are asked to bring along their own beverages.

The Waukee Public Library will be closed Dec. 26, but will reopen with regular hours, Dec. 27-31.

Sleepy Hollow Sports Park Trip

Participants in third through sixth grades can enjoy three hours of snow tubing during winter break at Sleepy Hollow Sports Park Dec. 29. Kids will leave from the Waukee City Hall at 9:15 a.m. and will return at 2:45 p.m.  Attendees will stop for lunch on the way home. Dress warm (gloves, hats, and boots) and bring spending money for snacks and lunch. Cost is $28. Waukee Family YMCA

If you're looking for all around fun during winter break, look no further than the . You can swim, play in the gym, take a class, play racquetball or whatever hits you that day.

The Waukee Family YMCA will be open regular hours beginning Dec. 26. They are as follows: 5 a.m-10 p.m. Monday-Friday  and 6 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday.
