Here are the top three stories today in Baton Rouge:
- This weekend, the Baton Rouge Fire Department placed third in the annual Pensacola Beach Firefighters Challenge. During the event, participants performed obstacles in the sand, including forced entry, dummy drag, and hose hoist, all in full structural firefighting gear. A BRFD official wrote on the department's Facebook page, "Way to represent the Baton Rouge Fire Department and city of Baton Rouge!" (WAFB)
- The Baton Rouge Police Department is continuing its "Buckle Up in Your Truck" campaign through Saturday, Apr. 30. During this time, officers plan to conduct patrols, motorcycle enforcement, and high neighborhood bicycle enforcement. The BRPD reminds the motoring community that all occupants in a motor vehicle, regardless of age and seating position, must be restrained at all times. Learn more about the campaign here. (WAFB)
- A Baton Rouge veteran passed away this Saturday at the age of 102. Johnnie Jones received the Purple Heart award in June 2021 after fighting through several injuries in the D-Day invasion. In addition to serving his country, Jones graduated from Southern University with a law degree and led the civil rights movement during the 1953 Baton Rouge bus boycotts. (WBRZ)
