East Baton Rouge Parish School System: Glen Oaks High School Is Putting Its Students First By Creating A Program That Benefits The Community

The Glen Oaks community wanted to find educational ways to impact its students. One of the ways it did this was by dismantling the community detention center and creating the Restoration Center on the school campus.

Lisa Shaw, the restorative practice coordinator at Glen Oaks, established the center based on the need of feeding families through food for thought and eating.

The Greater Food Bank donated the high school food that could feed over 50 families last month. The food included sausages, breakfast items, butter and Dunkadoos. The organization City Year assisted the school in putting the food in the new Reengagement Center.

“I plan on helping our future leaders,” she said. “We conduct activities at the center where students feel safe. One of those activities is the Word Wall, where students can write a word on a plastic cup and put it on the fence outside. The word can define something they wish to work on, like self-control, and it is a reminder for them to work hard on themselves.”
