Here are the top three stories today in Baton Rouge:

  1. At a press conference on Thursday, Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome announced the relaunches of HealthBR, a health-oriented website and a one-stop shop for health news. The website can help users find local doctors, and it offers other resources such as HIV/AIDS materials. It also offers healthy recipes and online classes. (The Advocate)
  2. Early evening on Wednesday, customers at a Baton Rouge Popeye's had to evacuate after fryers caught on fire and shut down the restaurant. The St. George Fire Department arrived at the scene on Burbank Drive and put out the fire. Thankfully, no injuries were reported and the building sustained minimal damage. (WBRZ)
  3. A retired Baton Rouge Police Department deputy chief was named the head of East Baton Rouge Parish School System's security. Deputy Chief Robert McGarner formerly spent 32 years with the BRPD before retiring in October 2020. In an effort to stop crime before it enters the classroom, McGarner and his security team plan to conduct a risk assessment on major crimes happening in the area surrounding the schools. (WBRZ)
