- For the first time since 1989, an LSU baseball player was honored with being the first overall pick in the Major League Baseball draft on Sunday, Jul. 9. Pitcher Paul Skenes spent just one season with the Tigers after transferring from the Air Force and that is all he needed to etch his name in the record book and seal his fate as the number one pick by the Pittsburg Pirates. Skenes received several honors this past season, including winning the Dick Howser Award, National Player of the Year, National Pitcher of the Year, and All-American, and he broke the school record for the most strikeouts in a season. Skenes wasn't the only Tiger celebrating as for the first time ever, teammates went first and second overall in the draft as Dylan Crews went second to the Washington Nationals. (WGNO New Orleans)
- The Louisiana State Police are currently working to gather information surrounding the fatal hit-and-run that occurred this past Saturday in East Baton Rouge Parish. The accident occurred sometime Saturday night when 40-year-old Jacob Perez was hit by a car while walking northbound on U.S. 61 and the driver fled the scene afterward. He was later hit by two more drivers while he was laying on the ground and was "unavoidable." He was pronounced dead on the scene. The two drivers who hit him did stay at the scene and cooperate throughout the process. Officers are still searching for the driver responsible for initially hitting Perez, and are asking anyone with information to please contact the police. (KATC News)
- There was a lot of celebration going on in the city this past Saturday as a recruitment block party was thrown with families rocking their red and gold as for the first time in over 15 years the school is once again public and in the East Baton Rouge School District. The community is beyond thrilled to welcome the school back and the generations of families are pouring in to assist in the school's success. The block party this past Saturday pulled in more than 20 students who will be attending this coming school year, and the goal is to have more than 600.
