John Harbaugh Fired on the 27th Anniv. of the End '99 204-Day NBA Lockout, says "Charm'tastic Mile"

January 8, 2026 - The "Charm'tastic Mile" of Baltimore (CTMB-1.3) www.thecharmtasticmile.com. The chic & famed 1.3 mile corridor located in the heart of Charm City (Est.1975) that connects Dwtn-West, the Inner Harbor & Harbor East (S. Greene & W. Pratt Street to S. President & Fleet Street) that is now listed on Google search as one of the Top 10-15 Most Famous Streets in America is reporting the Baltimore Ravens fired head-coach John Harbaugh on the 27th Anniversary of the end of the 1999 204-day NBA lockout.

Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti informed John Harbaugh Tuesday early-evening, January 6th that he was being relieved of his duties as head-coach after 18 seasons in Charm City. The difficult decision was made and now the Purple-n-Black will be looking for a new head coach, that person will be only the 4th head-coach for Baltimore heading into its 31st NFL season and 30th Anniversary-year (1996-2026). John compiled a 193-124 coaching record (13-11 playoffs) with the Ravens winning Super Bowl XLVII (47). Harbaugh will indeed have interest from other teams around the league.

Just 6-days (1-6-99) after America entered the year 1999 the NBA (National Basketball Association) ended their 204-day "Lockout". This amazing saga dragged-on and dragged-on. MLB fans 5-years earlier in 1994 saw their season shortened with no World Series. The '99 NBA season was shortened to 50-games for the regular-season with the San Antonio Spurs (4-1) defeating the NY Knicks in the NBA Finals.

Michael Jordan 7 months earlier won his 6th and final NBA Championship in 8-years. The GOAT had to move-on, no Scottie Pippen or Phil Jackson would be joining him for the regular-season in the Windy City. The Bulls incredible dynasty was over. Jordan had plenty of game left in his tank. #23 would become larger than life. He was on the same level with Babe Ruth & Muhammad Ali as sports Icons. When they say "Rare Air" he indeed was up there.

Jordan would announce his official 2nd retirement on January 13, 1999. He would later return for the 2001-02 season with the Washington Wizards. He displayed at times his dazzling former-self with moves in the paint, that patent fade-away (used later by Kobe), and drives to the basket for Jordan-esque finishes at the rim. He wasn't "Mr. Unstoppable". The Allen Iverson's, Kobe Bryant, Tracy Mc Grady, Ray Allen and Vince Carter were ready to take the mantle from "The Greatest" that ever did it in the NBA, just like that man born in Louisville, KY.

The Baltimore/Charm City connection to Jordan: Former Bulls Exec. Rod Thorn drafted Michael out of N. Carolina with the 3rd pick of the 1984 NBA Draft. Thorn played at West Virginia and wore the #44 just-like the NBA Logo himself, Jerry West. Thorn was selected with the 2nd overall pick in the 1963 NBA Draft by the Baltimore Bullets. He played one season for the Bullets (1963-64). Thorn was enshrined into the www.hoophall.com Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, the Class of 2018.

The 2nd version of the Baltimore Bullets were in town from 1963-73. They moved down the DMV before the start of the 1973-74 season. The 1974-75 made it all the way to the '75 NBA Finals losing in a 4-game sweep to Rick Barry and the Golden State Warriors. The original Baltimore Bullets (1944-54) are winners of the 2nd NBA Championship (1948) after the BAA (Basketball Association of America) and NBA merger of 1946-47. They are also the last NBA franchise to fold (1954).

When historians look back on January 6th, this day in sports history the firing of John Harbaugh by the Ravens will be linked to the Anniversary-date of the end of the '99 NBA Lockout. Will Harbaugh be the next coach of the NY Giants? The NBA & NFL offices are located in New York.
