GOBankingRates analyzed cities in all 50 states and chose one place in each locale where houses are a steal.

KITZMILLER, MD — Could you live in Kitzmiller, a tiny town located in the Allegheny mountains of Maryland?

Would your answer change if moving to Kitzmiller meant you could shave tens of thousands of dollars off the price of a home?

The personal finance website GOBankingRates used data from the Zillow Home Value Index and the U.S. Census Bureau to find the places in all 50 states where houses are a steal.

According to Zillow, the average single-family home in the United States is valued at about $367,711. Compare that to $80,272 in Kitzmiller.

With a population of just 300 people, according to the 2020 U.S. Census, Kitzmiller is located in Garrett County in far western Maryland and is the largest of the former coal mining towns along the upper Potomac.

According to the Garrett County Chamber of Commerce, Kitzmiller is home to the Kitzmiller River Walk, a scenic paved walkway that runs parallel to the north branch of the Potomac River. Across the street is the Kitzmiller Botanical Garden, which features a pond, trail and paved walkways, a bridge, and a stream.

Kitzmiller is also home to Garrett County's Wolf Den Run State Park, a 2,039-acre multi-use park that offers hiking, biking, fishing, birdwatching, hunting and off-road vehicle riding. The park is comprised of three distinct parcels, including unique rocky bluffs, approximately 3 miles of river access on the Potomac's North Branch, two cold water trout streams, Short Run, and the park's namesake, Wolf Den Run.

Nationally, the smallest city on GOBankingRates’ list is Brian Head, Utah. Originally known as Monument Peak, a town of 49 with a history rooted in exploration and logging. Also, with populations under 100 are a pair of former mining towns often described as “living ghost towns”: Austin, Nevada, population 47, and Johannesburg, California, population 77.

Other specks on the map with populations under 500 include Bly, Oregon (population 123); Davidson, Oklahoma (159); Medicine Lake, Montana (190); Lyon Mountain, New York (240); Drake North Dakota (245); Mystic, Iowa (257); Roxobel, North Carolina (347); Whiteface, Texas (390); Bowie, Arizona (399); Elmore, Minnesota (442); Pierce, Idaho (465); and Lind, Washington (491).
