PHOTOS: Arbutus Students Design Mobile Bird's Nest

Seventh and eighth-grade students in Michael Guarraia's after-school engineering program at participated in the May 5 Kinetic Sculpture Race sponsored by the American Visionary Arts Museum.

Working since last September, with creativity and ingenuity (and guidance from engineering students at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County), the students designed an enormous mobile bird's nest to represent the school's eagle pride.

Using only human power, the parade of outlandish art took a 15-mile, eight-hour course around the Inner Harbor and downtown Baltimore that included sand and mud challenges.

Participants in the Kinetic Sculpture Race included Melissa Koerner of Catonsville and Phillip Smith of Arbutus, with an Amish buggy competing for a second time, the Catonsville Times reported.
