Arbutus Soap Box Derby on a Roll

Homemade gravity-powered vehicles raced down Elm Road.

Elm Road was turned into a fast track on July 4 for Arbutus' soap box derby. Powered only by gravity, the homemade vehicles provided white-knuckle action as they tooled down towards a row of hay bales at the foot of Elm.

Prizes were awarded for races based on the size of the wheels, 6 inches, 10 inches and 12 inches. Since there was only one entrant with 12-inch wheels, that car raced against the winner of the 10-inch wheel category.

Good Sport Award (in memory of Samuel Davis): Jason Bosley (car 32)

Charlie Brown Hard Luck Award: Bryce Baquol (car 38), who had an accident but still finished the race

Most Creative Award: Gunnar Rippee (car 24)

Traveled Farthest Award: Sierra Wilkinson (car 36), who traveled from North Carolina just for the derby

6" Third Place: Gunnar Rippee (car 24), who won a t-shirt and hat

6" Runner-up: Austin Paugh (car 25), who won a treat from Ice Cream Cottage

6" Winner: Dragon Hornato (car 20), who won two tickets for the Hollywood Theater

10" Third Place: Johnny Simonyan (car 33), who won a treat from Ice Cream Cottage

10" Winner: Sierra Wilkenson (car 36), who won two tickets for the Hollywood Theater

10" Winner: Alex Boulter (car 41), who won two tickets for the Hollywood Theater.
