BALTIMORE, MD — Baltimore filmmaker John Waters was released from the hospital Tuesday after he was injured in a car crash in Baltimore County, according to multiple reports citing the writer.

In a statement sent to the Baltimore Sun and Baltimore Banner, 78-year-old Walters said he was shaken up but not seriously hurt in the crash.

“Since it hurts when I laugh I will have no witty answer about being in a car accident that no one has said was my fault,” Waters wrote in the statement. “Hope you understand. I’m released from the hospital and all is ok.”

Details about the crash were not immediately available.

Waters rose to fame in the 1970s for making cult films including "Multiple Maniacs,"
"Pink Flamingos" and "Female Trouble." Waters also wrote and directed the musical "Hairspray" and "Cecil B. Demented."
