CAMPANIA, ITALY — A Baltimore man visiting Mount Vesuvius in Italy fell into the volcano after he dropped his cell phone while trying to take a selfie, according to multiple reports.

The 23-year-old man was at the volcano's summit when he lost his grip on the phone, according to a report from SkyNews. As he tried to reach for the device, the man fell several meters into the mouth of the volcano.

The man was rescued by local guides in a helicopter, SkyNews reported.

According to a report by CNN, the man suffered only a few bruises on his body.

The man and three relatives were hiking on an unauthorized trail when he fell, CNN reported. Italian officials are still deciding whether to charge them with invasion of public territory.

Mount Vesuvius is an active volcano located near the Bay of Naples in Campania, Italy. The height of the cone in 2013 was 4,203 feet. At the summit of the cone is a large crater about 1,000 feet deep and 2,000 feet across. The crater was formed in a 1944 eruption.

Vesuvius was dormant for centuries until erupted in the year 79, burying the city of Pompeii.
