BALTIMORE, MD — The dark bay thoroughbred Journalism won Saturday's running of the 150th Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. The stakes race — the second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown — marks the end of the current race course; Pimlico is set to be demolished in June ahead of a $400 million reconstruction.

Journalism claimed the $2 million purse after narrowly beating out Gosger and Sandman respectively in a come from behind win. After a week of heavy rain, the sun came out in time for the pack of nine horses to blaze the mile and three-sixteenths course.

There will be no Triple Crown winner this year because Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty's owner opted out of running for the Black-Eyed Susan sash.

Racing fans must wait to see if Journalism and Sovereignty will face off against each other in the Belmont Stakes at the Saratoga Race Course in three weeks.

Trainer Michael McCarthy and jockey Umberto Rispoli were joined by the horse's many owners in the winner circle to receive the Woodlawn vase. Plenty of spectators were in attendance to watch the race, wear fascinating fascinators and sip Black-Eyed Susan cocktails.
