Train Collides With Car After Driver Goes Around Automatic Crossing Device: APD
A driver went around an automatic crossing device at a railroad crossing and collided with a train, according to Aberdeen Police.

ABERDEEN, MD — Authorities remind drivers that ignoring or going around railway crossing devices is "dangerous and illegal."
Last week, Aberdeen police officers were dispatched to Beards Hill Road Extended and North Philadelphia Boulevard for a report of a freight train hitting a car. Officers found an abandoned maroon Toyota with rear-end damage sitting off the road approximately 30 feet from the train tracks. The driver, who was the only person in the vehicle at the time, was found walking nearby. He did not sustain any injuries, according to the police department.
A preliminary investigation indicates that the driver failed to obey the automatic crossing device, which alerts drivers of an approaching train. As a result, the CSX freight train, hauling multiple train cars, collided with the vehicle. All train traffic in the area was halted temporarily while officers investigated. No derailment occurred, and the train—which can take over a mile to come to a complete stop—was eventually brought to rest near Havre de Grace. No members of the CSX crew reported any injuries.

"When the crossing signals activate, always come to a complete stop and wait for the train to pass. Remember, safety is everyone's responsibility. Drivers are strongly urged to exercise caution and follow all safety protocols at railroad crossings to prevent accidents and injuries," stated Aberdeen Police Captain C. William Reiber.
