The holiday was established in 1885 to recognize the birthday of President George Washington, according to History.com. It became known as Presidents Day in 1971 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to create more three-day weekends for workers in the United States.

As a federal holiday, Presidents Day could affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Bel Air.

Trash Pickup: Regular household trash removal for those town residents who normally receive pickup on Mondays will be collected Wednesday. Town residents who normally receive household trash removal on Tuesdays will remain as such. Because of the modified holiday refuse schedule, there will be no bulk collection Wednesday.

Harford County Public Library (Bel Air): All locations of the Harford County Public Library will be closed Monday in observance of Presidents Day

Harford County Government Offices: All offices will be closed Monday.

Harford County Public Schools: Schools and offices will be closed Monday.

Harford Transit LINK: Closed in observance of Presidents Day.

Harford Mall: Open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday

U.S. Postal Service: Post offices will be closed on Monday.

UPS, FedEx and Amazon: Business as usual.

Bel Air Police Department: Offices will be closed, police still working.

Harford County Sheriff's Office: Offices will be closed, deputies still working
