Montgomery Sees Jump In Coronavirus Cases As Testing Ramps Up

BETHESDA, MD — As COVID-19 continues to spread and more people get tested, Montgomery County is seeing a rise in confirmed coronavirus cases.

The Maryland Department of Health releases coronavirus case and fatality counts daily around 10 a.m. As of Tuesday morning, Montgomery County has 8,950 confirmed cases and 465 deaths. That's an increase of 533 positive infections and 23 fatalities from the past day.

So far in May, the county has averaged 230.6 new coronavirus cases per day. Tuesday marks the highest one-day jump this month.

In recent weeks, the state began counting "probable deaths" — or deaths of individuals who likely were infected, but never tested. Previously, deaths were only counted if they tested positive for the disease.

As of Tuesday morning, there have been 38 "probable deaths" in the county.

The county, which is home to roughly 1.1 million residents, has the highest number of deaths in the state. It also has the second highest number of confirmed cases, after Prince George's County, which has 12,240.

Statewide, there are now 41,546 positive infections and 1,963 confirmed deaths. Another 118, health officials believe, may have had COVID-19 but died without ever being tested.

To date, 167,112 people have tested negative for the disease and 2,868 have been released from isolation.

There are currently 1,421 hospitalized coronavirus patients, statewide. Of that, 537 are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

According to state data, hospitalizations are at its lowest level in three weeks.
