AACC Observes Sexual Assault Awareness Month

A series of activities and community events on the AACC Arnold campus will recognize this important national designation.

While the college is on spring break this week, we thought we would let you know about events planned in the coming weeks that recognize and promote awareness of violence against women.

"Girls Fight Back"

Women of all ages are welcome to learn new techniques for personal safety and self-defense at a free presentation led by Erin Weed, founder of the national organization Girls Fight Back (www.girlsfightback.com). Weed encourages audience participation and demonstrates the benefits of fighting β€œlike a girl.” The event will take place on Tuesday, April 5, 2 to 3:30 p.m. in the Pascal Center for Performing Arts. It is co-sponsored by the AACC Department of Public Safety, Student Life Office, Campus Activities Board and Health Services Office and Women’s Institute. For information, call 410-777-2096.

β€œSpeak”

On Wednesday, April 6, at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., a viewing of the film "Speak" (rated PG-13) will be held, followed by a discussion with a panel of experts. β€œSpeak” is a 2004 independent film based on the award-winning novel of the same title, which follows a traumatized teen raped by a high school upperclassman who becomes mute to cope. Leading the discussion will be representatives from the AACC Student Health Services office, a YWCA sexual assault advocate and a therapist. The 7 p.m. panel consists of a safe nurse, who conducts the forensic exam at the hospital on victims; a police officer from a sexual assault unit; a sexual assault YWCA therapist; and a sexual assault advocate. This free event is sponsored by AACC Health Services. Both viewings take place in the Florestano Building, Room 101. For information, call 410-777-2480.
