BHS Spring Sports Wrapping Up

Schedules set for region match-ups.

As the end of the school year approaches, so does the spring season for local sports teams.

Brackets for state championships for high school springs sports teams was released by the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association this week. All schools in Maryland are divided by size into four geographic divisions: 1A, 2A, 3A, 4A. Broadneck High School plays 4A in the east division. 

Note: The one through four seeds were awarded based on win-loss record, while the five through 12 seeds are slotted at random.

Baseball

Slated as the No. 6 seed, Broadneck faces eleventh-seed Annapolis today, weather permitting. The winner of that match will face South River in Edgewater on May 16. The boys state finals game will be played at Ripken Stadium on May 27.

Softball

Earning a first round bye as the No. 2 seed in the 4A East region, Broadneck plays seventh-seed North Point in the region quarterfinals to be played Monday, May 16. (Top seed and rival Chesapeake will play Arundel on Monday after earning a bye.) The softball state final game will be played at the University of Maryland on May 28.

Boys Lacrosse 

Underdogs fourteenth-seed Broadneck boys lacrosse faced off with third-seed South River in the first round yesterday afternoon in Edgewater. In a tough loss, they fell 6-5 in overtime. (See attached video.) The state tournament will be held at UMBC Stadium on May 24-25.

Girls Lacrosse

Bestowed with the fourth seed, Broadneck girls lacrosse faced 13-seed Old Mill in their first round of playoffs at home and won. They now face Annapolis in the next round to be played at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. The state tournament will also be held at UMBC Stadium on May 24-25.

Track & Field

County championships were held Wednesday at Annapolis High School.

Notable Broadneck finishers included:

  • Stephanie Crane, finishing second in the Girls 800 meter run. Rachel Armstrong placed fourth.
  • Stephanie Crane finishing second in the Girls 1600 meter run.
  • Kayla Cook finishing third in the Girls 300 meter hurdles.
  • Broadneck girls finishing third in the 4X400 meter relay and second in the 4X800 meter relay.
  • Charles Skord finishing third in the Boys 1600 meter run.
  • Ben Hannon finishing third in the Boys 300 meter hurdles.
  • Mark Bickley finishing third in the Boys Long Jump.
  • Jonathon Greene finishing third in the Boys Shot Put.
