Big Band Sounds at Broadneck High
Big Band Caliente in concert tonight to help raise money for new BHS Marching Band uniforms.
The auditorium of Broadneck High School will be rocking tonight as the Big Band Caliente performs in concert at 7:30 p.m. This professional musical group is visiting to raise money for the high school marching band's new uniform fundraising drive.
“This concert is for everyone in the community who enjoys big band sounds with a Latin feel,” said Broadneck High School Director of Bands Matt Heist. “We are so fortunate to have this level of professional players here to support us.”
Big Band Caliente was started by professional drummer Marty Knepp, director of the Jazz Band at Anne Arundel Community College. Knepp has gathered some of the best musicians in the Annapolis area, and the group performs at professional gigs (like Blues Alley in Washington, DC) and at community events throughout the region.

This effort will be one of several throughout the next few months as the high school marching band raises the money required to purchase new uniforms. The current uniforms were bought more than 10 years ago and, because of the dedication of parent volunteers, have held up longer than usual.
The amount of money required to purchase the 100 uniforms needed for a marching band the size of Broadneck’s is quite daunting.

“The figure is well over $30,000,” explained Heist. “And that is in addition to the funding required to run a competitive marching band program.”
The fundraising campaign began last year, and, to date, the band is about halfway there. Many students have been fitted and sizes ordered, and the fundraising continues.
“I am amazed at the generosity our community has shown in this effort so far,” said Heist. “Both individuals and businesses have been so supportive of our efforts.”
“But,” he adds with a smile, “we sure could use even more.”
For band alumni who have fond memories of marching in the previous uniform, they can purchase either the hat or the uniform itself, each for just $25 for the cause. See the attached order form that can be mailed with payment to Heist at the school.
In the meantime, if you are looking for a fun and entertaining way to hear a talented professional big band for just $10, come out to the high school tonight and enjoy the music.
