Broadneck Elementary Celebrates Dr. Seuss’ Birthday

Tall, striped hats, Things 1 and 2, and Cindy Lou Who made appearances at Broadneck Elementary on Wednesday during the school’s annual event celebrating the fabulous stories provided to generations of readers by Dr. Seuss.

The annual event was part of the national Read Across America day, sponsored by the National Education Association. The annual reading motivation program calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss.

“I always love this day,” said Broadneck’s reading teacher Melissa Edgar who sported a classic "Cat in the Hat" wardrobe. “Kids are always excited to revisit their favorite Dr. Seuss books.”

One special connection of the day was with second-grader Jack Geisel, whose great-great grandfather was cousins with Theodor Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss himself. Jack’s uncle has some of the original drawings from "The Cat in the Hat" autographed by Geisel.

“It is pretty neat,” Jack agreed, sporting his own "Cat in the Hat" headwear. “I like his books, but my favorite kind are sports books.”  His favorite Dr. Seuss tale?  “I really like Green Eggs and Ham,” Jack said after thinking it through. 

Downstairs, Joan Thomas’ first-graders were busy learning some interesting facts about Dr. Seuss before their guest reader arrived.

“He was born in Massachusetts,” said one student.

“He used the name Dr. Seuss because he wanted to sound more important,” said another.
