Celebrating the Arts in Broadneck

March is "Arts in Our School" Month, and Broadneck area schools celebrated this week.

Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March that emphasizes the value of art education for all children. Whether it’s visual or performing arts, the Broadneck area is brimming with local talent, and area residents were treated to a variety of opportunities to recognize and appreciate those talents this past week.Β

The visual art talents of local students were on display both at the Broadneck Library as well as Broadneck High School for the annual β€œBruins Arts Festival.”

The event included displays of the works of elementary, middle and high school students from all Broadneck cluster schools, including:Β  Arnold, Belvedere, Broadneck, Cape St. Claire, and Windsor Farm elementary schools, Severn and Magothy River middle schools, and Broadneck High. On Thursday, performing arts groups provided entertainment in the high school auditorium, including the amazing high school dance team. All events revealed the range and depth of the talent of Broadneck students.

"We have work from all of the schools in the Broadneck feeder system, from Kindergarten kids starting their first art project to seniors applying to art schools next year,” said Raven Bishop, art teacher at Severn River Middle School who helped coordinate the event. β€œI love getting to see the kids show the work to their parents and explaining it, as well as seeing all of my old students that are in high school now."

Some of the beautiful work displayed was that of Kylie Nicholson, a Broadneck senior who has her own photo website and business (kylienicphotography.com). She has participated in the art show for all four years at Broadneck High School.

"I love showing my art to the world and seeing all the other students’ artwork,” Nicholson said. β€œEveryone's so talented. There's some amazing stuff, even from the elementary school kids."

"The best part of art is expressing yourself to everybody,” said junior Rachel McCready who attended the visual arts show. β€œThis a great way to showcase what you've done."
