Frugal Family: Saving at the Pump

With gas prices soaring, here are some easy tips for using less gas.

Here are some tips for paying less at the pump:

1)  Because a car uses more gas when accelerating, it is common sense to accelerate and brake less. Drivers who speed up and slam on the brakes more often will pay more at the pump.

2)  Reduce the need for higher air conditioning by parking in the shade and turn off the air five minutes before you reach your destination so you won’t keep it working until the last second.

3)  If you are on a longer drive and have the ability to use speed control, do it. It will keep your speed constant without as much acceleration and braking.

4)  Reduce the weight of your car by emptying out the trunk and removing heavy items that you don't need.

5)  If you are going to be waiting for more than 20 seconds, either in the parking lot or for a train or road work stoppage, it is better to turn the car off.

6)  If you are traveling at a faster rate of speed, close your windows to avoid turbulence that can cost you fuel.

7)  Inflate your tires to about 0.2 PSI to reduce friction.
