Get Out: Memorial Day Weekend Options

Live music, shopping, and even a parade are on tap for the region this holiday weekend, marking the start of summer.

The start of summer is here! Enjoy the three-day weekend (for those who have it) but remember to take time on Monday to honor those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms.

Here are some weekend activity suggestions:

1)  Live Music at Griffin’s Grill

When/Where: Local bands Nautical Wheeler (on Friday) and The Shore Thing (on Saturday) perform at Griffin’s Grill on Ritchie Highway in Arnold, both starting at 8 p.m. 

Why Go:  Come and enjoy the sounds of trop rock and island music (especially Jimmy Buffett) from Nautical Wheeler and music you remember from the '50s, '60s and early '70s from The Shore Thing.

When/Where:  Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Colonial Players Theater (108 East Street in Annapolis).

Why Go: Lettice and Lovage is a modern British comedy written by Peter Shaffer, the author of Equus and Amadeus. The humorous story surrounds the unlikely friendship of two characters:  (1) Lettice Duffet, a Shakespeare and medieval weaponry enthusiast, and (2)  Charlotte (Lotte) Schoen, a representative of the National Trust, who is not charmed by Lettice’s historical embellishments.

Price: $20.

3)  Annapolis Nautical Flea Market 

When/Where: Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.

Why Go:  This is the third annual Annapolis Nautical Flea Market. Produced by the U.S. Yacht Shows Inc., shoppers will find new and previously owned boats as well as nautical equipment, art, jewelry and accessories. Held rain or shine.

Tickets: $5

4)  Chick Corea plays The Avalon

When/Where:  Saturday, 8 p.m., at the Avalon Theatre in Easton.

Why Go:  A jazz legend with Broadneck area ties, Chick Corea is a 16-time Grammy winner and jazz keyboard virtuoso.

Price:  $60

5)  Annapolis Memorial Day Parade

When/Where:  The parade on Monday begins at 10 a.m. at Amos Garrett Boulevard heading up West Street, around Church Circle, down Main Street to the end of City Dock at Randall Street. Immediately after the parade, there will be a wreath laying ceremony aboard a Yard Patrol boat.

Why Go:  The parade offers a fitting way to recognize the holiday and those who paid the price for our freedoms.
