Graduation 2011: BHS Seniors Win Awards in Math and Science

Broadneck seniors recognized by teachers for their exceptional work in science and math.

Every year, the teachers of each academic department of Broadneck High School meet to determine which of their deserving students will be recognized for their talent and hard work throughout the year. The students are then recognized in the annual senior awards ceremony days before graduation.

Here is a summary of the award winners for 2011 in the disciplines of the sciences and math.

Environmental Steward Award – John Allyn

“John has shown an extreme appreciation for the environment and the environmental aspects of his science classes while here at Broadneck,” said science teacher Linda Turner. “We hope that John will share his enthusiasm with more students, expanding the world’s knowledge of environmental issues.”

Life Sciences Award – Hayley White

“Hayley is an extraordinary biology student who has an unmatched passion for the topic,” said Turner. “Her teachers hope she puts as much passion into her career as she has in her school work.”

Physical Sciences Award – Jenna Tribull

Turner described Tribull as an enthusiastic and energetic student. “She went above and beyond in terms of her studies and it has paid off,” said Turner. “She enjoys science and it shows.”

Overall Science Award – Hope Brooks

A passionate environmentalist, Turner said Brooks “puts forth an amazing amount of effort in all that she does.”  See more about Hope's efforts here

Environmental Science Club’s Change the World Award – Hannah Sturm

This is the first year for this award which was inspired by Sturm who was a member of the club all four years and president for two years. “Hannah has consistently shown a passion and love for the earth and the creatures that inhabit it,” said Turner. 

Family & Consumer Science Outstanding Senior – Allison Zentgraf

“In our preschool program, the children loved having Allison as their teacher. Her leadership was exemplary and she always came prepared with many creative ideas for activities,” said Sharon Pettit, Child Development Teacher. “Her competence and maturity are evident in all that she does.”

Broadneck Math Award – Ian Zierdt

“Ian has demonstrated exceptional ability in the mathematics field,” said BHS math department chair Diane Riley. “This young man has taken every difficult math course and served on the math team for two years, scoring significant points for Broadneck.”
