Local NAACP Leader Receives Medgar Evers Medal of Freedom

Gerald Stansbury, president of the local chapter of the NAACP, will soon be honored with the Medgar W. Evers Medal of Freedom.

Gerald Stansbury, a lifelong Broadneck resident, willΒ soon be honored withΒ the Medgar W.Β Evers Medal of Freedom for his work with the Maryland NAACP.

Stansbury, the leader of the Maryland chapter of the NAACP,Β and six others from across the country will receive the award at the NAACP's 104th conference in Orlando, FL, scheduled throughout this week.

β€œThese winners are the lifeblood of their communities and of this great Association,” said NAACP President and CEO Benjamin Todd Jealous in a press release. β€œLike Medgar Evers, they are fearlessly on the front line in the fight for justice and equality. Most importantly, they are each inspiring new generations of civil and human rights leaders to carry on their legacy.”

The medalΒ β€œhonors an individual or group who has demonstrated a lifetime of courage and laid the foundation for present and future leaders in the cause of civil and human rights," according to the NAACP's website.
