New Marching Uniforms Become a Reality

Generous donation from Broadneck's senior class seals the deal for new uniforms.

For over a decade, the Broadneck High School Marching Bruins have worn the familiar uniforms: burgundy jackets, white pants,  white shoes and shako hats. Slowly over the years, the uniforms have worn out and been lovingly pieced together by volunteer moms.

Broadneck High School’s band director Matt Heist knew it was time for a new look, but the price of new uniforms was daunting.

“For our band, we were talking a price tag of $35,000,” explained Heist. “Given the economy, it was a tall order.”

Over the past school year, Heist and the music boosters raised over $13,000, meeting the halfway mark. The deadline for ordering the uniforms loomed, and Heist took the plunge by ordering the uniforms this spring and hoping that the generosity and support from the community would carry them through. Events such as summer car washes, performances, and restaurant nights were being considered.

Meanwhile, the BHS Class of 2011 was busy adding up all of their expenses for graduation and prom. Heist spoke with class representatives to inform them of the band’s efforts and see if they could contribute something should they have any extra money.

“A few weeks ago I pitched the idea to them and they told me they would help but didn't know how much yet,” said Heist. “One of the class officers asked me how much we thought we needed and I told them that it was probably right around $12,000 for everything in addition to what we've raised. Yesterday I found out that they transferred $12,000 into our account at the school to pay off they uniforms!”

The new uniforms will have an updated, more modern look, taken from the designs of drum corps performing groups.

Now the Class of 2011 can come to the parades, the games, and the marching shows year after year and know just how much of an impact and legacy they made for future BHS students.

“I am so humbled by everyone's generosity,” said Heist. “What a gift.”
